Ensemble Matheus
Since its foundation in 1991, the Ensemble Matheus has built an exceptionally diverse repertoire, establishing itself as one of the most renowned ensembles on the international stage. Under the direction of its founder, Jean-Christophe Spinosi, the ensemble continues to refine its approach to performing with both period and modern instruments. To this end, they draw on musicological research and an in-depth study of primary sources.
The Ensemble Matheus enjoys close artistic ties with leading venues such as the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the Théâtre du Châtelet, the Theater an der Wien and the Salzburg Festival. They regularly perform in venues around the world including in London, Barcelona, New York, Madrid and Munich. The ensemble collaborates with exceptional soloists including Cecilia Bartoli, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Rolando Villazón and Philippe Jaroussky, and always fosters a new generation of artists, such as the countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński. In 2023, Jean-Christophe Spinosi and the Ensemble Matheus founded the Académie Haendel-Hendrix, which brings together young musicians from leading international institutions to prepare them for a diverse repertoire, ranging from Baroque to contemporary music, including popular music: Through projects such as »Musique pour la planète«, including, for example, the programme »The Four Seasons and Global Warming«, the ensemble combines music and science to shed new light on pressing environmental issues. The »Olimpiade« sees the artists combine music and sport, as demonstrated at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris.
