Lang Lang
Lang Lang is without doubt one of the world’s leading classical musicians. A pianist, teacher and philanthropist, he has become one of the most influential and committed ambassadors of the arts in the 21st century.
Lang Lang performs in sold-out concert venues the world over and has long-standing musical partnerships with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Gustavo Dudamel, Daniel Barenboim and Christoph Eschenbach, as well as with the world’s top orchestras. In addition, Lang Lang is always looking to exchange ideas with artists who range beyond classical music’s borders – his performances at the Grammy Awards with Metallica, Pharrell Williams and Herbie Hancock are examples of this.
In 2008, he founded the Lang Lang International Music Foundation, with which he gives children around the world access to musical education, and in 2013 he was appointed UN Messenger of Peace.
The Chinese pianist began playing the piano at the age of three; he won the Shenyang Piano Competition and gave his first public piano recital at the age of five. At the age of nine he went to the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, four years later he played Chopin’s 24 Etudes in the Beijing Concert Hall and won first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in Sendai, Japan. This was followed by studies with Gary Graffman at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. The then 17-year-old made his international breakthrough when he stepped in at short notice at the »Gala of the Century«, performingTchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach – invitations to the world’s leading concert venues followed.
Lang Lang’s boundless drive to win new audiences for classical music has been recognised with numerous honours and awards, including an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Music London, the highest prize given by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China and the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
