SPARK
Spark reimagines classical music. The quintet places Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart and their peers in a fresh new context, forging links with the sounds and lifestyle of the present day. Classical at heart, outwardly wilful, inquisitive and nonconformist, they move between classical works, minimal music and avant-garde. With enthusiasm and abandon, they mix styles and explore a galaxy of sonic potential with their well-stocked arsenal of instruments comprising around 30 different flutes, violin, viola, violoncello, melodica and piano.
Since its foundation in 2007, the group has established itself at the forefront of the young creative classical scene, receiving an ECHO Klassik Award in 2011. Their latest album »Visions of Venus« (2024) was a labour of love for the band, teaming up with Wallis Bird to breathe new life into female composers from different genres from the Middle Ages to the present day. The quintet is now well established at the world’s biggest venues and festivals – whether in chamber performances, exciting collaborative projects or in a solo role with orchestra. Spark have collaborated with orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, WDR Funkhaus Orchestra Cologne, Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra, Rhineland-Palatinate State Philharmonic, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, Residentie Orkest The Hague, Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn, Folkwang Chamber Orchestra Essen and South German Chamber Orchestra Pforzheim, and have performed world premieres of works written specially for them.
This adventurous group is cherished for its thrilling, highly energetic live performances – as Musikfest audiences saw for themselves for the first time 15 years ago. The five talented musicians get physical on stage with ebullient vitality and the pulsating power of a rock band. Together they present music that ignites passion. Flutists Daniel Koschitzki and Andrea Ritter, violinist Stefan Balazsovics, cellist Isabel GarcÃa Castro and pianist Christian Fritz – together they Spark.
