Programme:
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major Op. 55 »Eroica«
Luigi Cherubini: Requiem in C minor
When St Vitus, Germany’s largest single-nave church without pillars, was built in Löningen between 1809 and 1830, the region was part of the Confederation of the Rhine under the aegis of Napoleon Bonaparte. To whom did Ludwig von Beethoven originally dedicate his groundbraking »Eroica« symphony? That’s right, Napoleon. However, after he proclaimed himself emperor in Paris in 1804, the composer withdrew his dedication. Beethoven considered Luigi Cherubini to be the greatest living composer. The latter’s requiem in C minor, composed in 1816 to mark the 23rd anniversary of the execution of the French king Louis XVI, was even played at Beethoven’s funeral. Belgian conductor Philippe Herreweghe, laureate of the 2021 Musikfest Prize, has an arguably unsurpassed talent for combining voices and instruments into an organic whole. His refreshing approach to these masterpieces will scrape off the old layer of varnish and bring out details hitherto unknown and unheard, promising a thrilling experience.
