Sir Simon Rattle, last seen at the Msuikfest in 1996, will bring the festival to a close at the Glocke. Back then, the maestro appeared with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, before taking up the position of chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic from 2002 to 2018. The Freiburger Barockorchester has been one of the world’s leading period instrument ensembles for over three decades, and Rattle has collaborated with them regularly since 2018. Their attention now turns to Robert Schumann, a key figure in Romantic music. Schumann found that working on his Second Symphony helped him to recover from severe depression, as can be seen in its journey from darkness to light, from a melancholic beginning to a euphoric finale. His violin concerto, written for the legendary violinist Joseph Joachim, was never performed during the composer’s lifetime. Following fluctuating critical reception, it is now widely regarded as one of the greatest Romantic solo concertos thanks to its profound emotional depth. The renowned violinist Isabelle Faust, herself a highly sensitive interpreter, has contributed to this renaissance. This meeting of musical giants will reveal the multi-layered emotions in Schumann’s music in a refreshingly new light!
