Programme:
František Ignác Tůma: Stabat Mater
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Requiem in D minor K. 626
Mozart composed his unfinished requiem in 1791, the last year of his life, tragically making it his own requiem mass. It was commissioned by his widow Constanze and completed by his pupils Joseph Eybler and Franz Xaver Süssmayr. This is also the version Collegium 1704 will perform on period instruments together with their choir under the baton of Czech conductor and expert in baroque music Václav Luks. Their interpretations captivate audiences and critics alike, as they bring out subtle nuances and surprising accents, resulting in performances pulsating with vitality – surprisingly modern and full of emotion. They preface Mozart’s legendary sacred legacy with the »Stabat Mater« by František Ignác Tůma (1704-1774), in which the Bohemian composer masterfully blends old and new styles. With this poignant work, in which the Mother of God sings of her pain for the crucified man, Luks and his ensembles underline the tragic power of the requiem, while at the same time reminding us of Mozart’s close ties to Bohemia.
