Programme:
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor Op. 25
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major »Eroica«
After their successful Musikfest debut to mark their 25th anniversary last year, the message that emanates from the work of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is now more relevant than ever: to enable dialogue between the equal voices of the different Middle Eastern Cultures by sharing the experience of making music together. Active listening to each other is essential when making music together. Communicating through music can build trust and break down barriers that might otherwise have seemed unsurmountable. A messaged shared by Chinese star pianist Lang Lang! Not only does he support children around the world through the foundation he set up in 2008, he was also appointed UN Ambassador for peace in 2013. For over 20 years now, he has enjoyed a musical partnership with Daniel Barenboim. When the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra kicks off its summer tour in Bremen before stopping in Berlin, Salzburg and Lucerne, they will perform Mendelssohn’s vibrant Piano Concerto No 1 and Beethoven’s groundbreaking, convention-shattering »Eroica« Symphony – a powerful statement of humanism by way of the universal language of music if ever there was one!
