The Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE) was founded in 1981 by former members of the European Community Youth Orchestra and has since established itself as one of the world’s leading orchestras. The independent ensemble is organised on a project-by-project basis and has been a regular guest at the Musikfest ever since 1994, returning for their 12th appearance this year. Under the baton of Robin Ticciati, Chief Conductor of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Music Director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera and newly appointed honorary member of COE, they will highlight the wealth of music of the first half of the 20th century. All of the composers on the programme were exposed to a multitude of musical movements, so their work is characterised by stylistic pluralism and is highly expressive, yet they never questioned tonality. When the orchestra is joined by South African soprano Golda Schultz in her Musikfest debut, singing songs and arias by Gershwin, Weill, Korngold and Bernstein with her wonderfully warm, incredibly expressive voice and flawless technique, the result is perfect bliss!
