With his innate musical sensitivity and natural talent, 24-year-old pianist Mao Fujita quickly attracted international attention. On the occasion of his US debut at Carnegie Hall, the New York Times wrote in January 2023: »When his fingers touched the keys, waves of airy filigree, beautifully formed and finished, emerged in almost uninterrupted streams.«

Born in Tokyo, Mao Fujita was still studying at the Tokyo College of Music when he won first prize at the prestigious Concours International de Piano Clara Haskil in Switzerland in 2017, as well as the Audience Prize, the Prix Modern Times and the Prix Coup de Cœur, which brought him to the attention of the international music world for the first time. In 2019, he also won the silver medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. In previous years, he had already won his first international prize at the World Classic in Taiwan (2010) and was a prizewinner at numerous national and international competitions such as the Rosario Marciano International Piano Competition in Vienna (2013), Zhuhai International Mozart Competition for Young Musicians (2015) and the Gina Bachauer International Young Artists Piano Competition (2016).

Mao Fujita has made his debut with conductors such as Riccardo Chailly, Marek Janowski, Andris Nelsons, Lahav Shani, Christoph Eschenbach, Vasily Petrenko and Ryan Bancroft with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Lucerne Festival Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester, Munich Philharmonic, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, DSO Berlin, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Filarmonica della Scala, Orchestra sinfonica nazionale della RAI, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra and Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. As a chamber musician, he has performed with Renaud Capuçon, Antoine Tamestit, Kian Soltani, Zlatomir Fung, Marc Bouchkov and Makoto Ozone, among others.

Highlights of the 2023/24 season include tours with the Gewandhausorchester, the Czech Philharmonic and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, concerts with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra as well as recitals at the Elbphilharmonie, Heidelberger Frühling, KlavierFestival Ruhr and on tour in Japan and China, among others.

Mao Fujita is a Sony Classical International exclusive artist and presented his debut album in October 2022 with a complete recording of all Mozart sonatas, which met with universal acclaim for its transparent sound and vibrantly detailed interpretation.

He moved to Berlin in 2022 to continue his studies with Kirill Gerstein.
