The versatile and highly successful musicians of the string quartet Quatuor Ebène have won multiple awards and perform all over the world. With their charismatic style, their fresh take on tradition and their open exploration of new formats, the musicians continue to inspire a wide and younger audience and share their talent through various international projects.
After studying with the Ysaÿe Quartet in Paris and with Gábor Takács, Eberhard Feltz and György Kurtág, the ensemble, founded in 1999, caused a sensation in 2004 when they scooped up multiple awards at the ARD Music Competition - the prelude to a string of further successes: for example, the quartet were awarded the Belmont Prize of the Forberg-Schneider Foundation in 2005, were laureate of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust in 2007 and they were the first ensemble to be honoured with the Musikmesse Frankfurt Prize in 2019.
In addition to the traditional repertoire, the quartet also frequently delve into other styles, as the New York Times noted in 2009: »A String Quartet that can easily morph into a jazz band«. Three albums bear witness to the agility with which Ebène improvise on jazz standards and pop songs: »Fiction« (2010), »Brazil« (2014) and »Eternal Stories« (2017). In June 2024, the ensemble will bring »Waves«, a new project with electronic musician Xavier Tribolet, to the European stages.
Quatuor Ebène's albums with recordings of Bartók, Beethoven, Debussy, Haydn, Fauré and the Mendelssohn siblings have won multiple awards, including Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine and the Midem Classic Award. In 2015 and 2016, the musicians turned to Lieder and worked with Philippe Jaroussky and Matthias Goerne, among others. With Antoine Tamestit, Quatuor Ebène recorded the Mozart String Quintets K. 515 and K. 516, which were released in spring 2023. The album has been honoured with awards such as the Choc Classica, Diapason d'Or and Gramophone of the Month. Most notable is their recording of Beethoven's 16 string quartets, recorded on six continents between May 2019 and January 2020. With this project, the ensemble also celebrated the 20th anniversary of their stage debut, marked with performances of the complete string quartet cycle in leading European concert halls such as the Philharmonie de Paris and the Alte Oper Frankfurt. Invitations from Carnegie Hall New York, the Verbier Festival and the Vienna Konzerthaus were also on the agenda.
For the 23/24 season, the Philharmonie Luxembourg has selected the Quatuor Ebène as its artist in residence. In addition to chamber music concerts, the musicians will present John Adams' »Absolute Jest« with the Luxembourg Philharmonic. As Quatuor en résidence à Radio France, they will return to Paris three times this season. Other highlights of the season include guest appearances at the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Megaron Athens, Wigmore Hall London and Carnegie Hall in New York.
