After his apprenticeship with Arp Schnitger, Christian Vater founded his own workshop in Hanover in 1702. The instrument in Bockhorn was inaugurated by Vater himself on 25 December 1722. Edoardo Bellotti, Professor of Harpsichord at the Eastman School of Music/University of Rochester, is one of the world’s leading experts for the Renaissance and Baroque keyboard repertoire. Here he combines works written for joyous occasions and for funeral services. While Alessandro Poglietti dedicated his suite »Il Rossignolo« to the newly married imperial couple Leopold I and Eleonora in 1677, Dieterich Buxtehude's "Mit Fried und Freud" was written as funeral music for his father, who died in 1674. Johann Caspar Kerll in turn set the stages of a battle, from the positioning of the armies to the victory celebration, to gripping music in his »Battaglia«. The Bolognese monk Padre Giovanni Battista Martini created over 30 masses and was also a respected composition teacher whose pupils included Bach's youngest son Johann Christian, whose Sinfonia L'Imperiale el Signor Haydn still captivates audiences with its refreshing, festive and majestic character.
