Programme:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: String Quintets No. 1 in B flat major K. 174, No. 2 in C minor K. 406 and No. 6 in E flat major K. 614
Spunicunifait? The internet only tells us that it is a word that Mozart invented in a letter to his cousin Maria Anna Thekla, known as Bäsle. The ensemble with the same name is made up of members of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Spira Mirabilis and the Aurora Orchestra, who want to breathe new life into Mozart’s string quintets – proving them to be some of chamber music’s highest achievements. Mozart composed six string quintets, which, according to violinist Lorenza Borrani, are special for a variety of reasons: "The alchemy of the instruments swapping roles is incredibly varied and full of surprises, causing each of these quintets to open up different dimensions, worlds and planets." On period instruments and faithful modern copies, Spunicunifait present an essential cross-section of these gems. Energetic and dynamic, while at the same time transparent and with precise articulation, this ensemble quickly make it clear why Mozart brought this genre to its zenith with his work.
