This is what pomp is all about! No one has cast the splendour and glory of the British Empire in music with greater or more lavish baroque magnificence than George Frideric Handel. Both his four Coronation Anthems, composed for the coronation of George II in 1727, and the Dettingen Te Deum, which celebrated Britain’s victory over the French army in 1743, were festive musical expressions of triumph, a striking reflection of the power of the British Crown. Handel’s gilded musical world full of grandeur and majesty couldn’t be in better hands with Hervé Niquet and Le Concert Spirituel. The French conductor and the ensemble he founded in 1987 specialise in the eventful musical life of the Baroque and early Classical era and have been raising the bar for years with their recordings of countless rediscovered works. With his perfect ear for the right balance between choir and instrumentalists, Hervé Niquet guarantees that these truly royal sounds will not leave a soul untouched with their unprecedented opulence and remarkable timelessness – God save the King!
