Johann Sebastian Bach: »Goldberg Variations« BWV 988

Ever since Jean Rondeau's international breakthrough in 2012 as the winner of the prestigious harpsichord competition in Bruges, his virtuosity, expressive style and originality have attracted a whole new level of attention to this instrument in just a few years. For this, the French artist was honoured with the Förderpreis Deutschlandfunk at the 2016 Musikfest Bremen. Naturally, he also plays Bach's famous Goldberg Variations on the harpsichord, with its fragile yet energetic sound for which the composer originally conceived the work. For his approach, Rondeau immersed himself in an edition with Bach's own notes and corrections and came to the realisation that »they are an ode to silence«. The result is a completely new insight into one of the most versatile sets of variations in music history. With his exquisite touch, which moves between balanced elegance and rousing vitality, Rondeau offers an interpretation with an exceptionally keen sense for the nuances: »The whole of Bach is contained in them, all of the music«.
