Avi Avital is the mandolin’s ambassador par excellence. Born in Israel the son of Moroccan immigrants, the artist has given the instrument an astonishing boost in popularity with his passionate commitment. As original repertoire for the mandolin is very limited, Avi Avital is a driven traveller between worlds, seeking to bridge the gap between classical, jazz and world music. Omer Klein has been his congenial partner for this open-minded, genre-defying approach for years. Trained in the USA, the pianist gets his inspiration not only from Western jazz, but also from the oriental tradition of his native Israel as well as Minimal music. They already wowed Musikfest audiences together in 2012 and 2018, and now they are joined exclusively by the classically trained clarinettist Ismail Lumanovski from Macedonia. It’s a perfect match! Having grown up with the spirit of Balkan folk music, he is also passionate about building bridges between cultures. On their collective musical journey, the trio interweave influences from the Middle East and the Balkans with elements of classical music and jazz – bursting with verve, vitality and virtuosity!
