Lorenzo Ghielmi’s love for the organ was sparked on a summer holiday in a church: he heard a boy playing the organ and was so enchanted by the sounds that when he got home, he announced: »I don’t want to play the piano anymore, I want to play the organ!« And so he did, as well as co-founding the legendary Italian baroque ensemble Il Giardino Armonico and immersing himself in historically informed performance practice. All of this predestined him for the organ in Hohenkirchen, an instrument built between 1694 and 1699 by Joachim Kayser, a contemporary of Arp Schnitger. Beyond the influence of Buxtehude, Ghielmi also looks at the composer’s Italian and Dutch forerunners Frescobaldi and Sweelinck on his personal journey to Bach. When he arrives at the Thomaskantor, he includes some works that only survived as fragments, completed by himself in Bach’s style – not something he would have imagined on that fateful summer holiday …
