Pene Pati
Pene Pati is revered for his »extraordinary gift for producing a golden thread of sound that can swell without strain to magnificence« (The Telegraph) and is instantly recognizable by his »round and sunshine filled voice« (Le Monde). His warm and winning personality has endeared him to both audience and critics around the world. The first Samoan tenor to perform on Europe’s top stages, Pene Pati boasts an exceptional versatility in a broad palette of roles from Mozart to Massenet, Donizetti, Gounod, Puccini and Verdi.
Pene Pati’s 2024/25 season opened with his return to the Opéra national de Paris with his debut as Gounod’s »Faust«. Two highly anticipated debuts are next: at the Royal Ballet and Opera as Rodolfo in Puccini’s »La Bohème« under Speranza Scappucci and at the Metropolitan Opera as Duca in Verdi’s »Rigoletto«. Rodolfo holds a firm position across the season’s planning, marking important house debuts at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Lyric Opera of Chicago and his return to San Fransisco Opera. With the Orchestre de Chambre de Genève he further expands his repertoire with first performances as Massenet’s Werther. At the Osterfestspiele Salzburg, Pene Pati sang Mendelssohn’s »Elias« under the baton of Maxim Emelyanychev and with the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester and Michael Sanderling he performs and records both Mozart’s »Requiem« and Fazıl Say’s world-premiere, »Mozart ve Mevlana«. In addition to gala concerts in Berlin, Paris and Istanbul, he performs in recital at Opéra national de Bordeaux with pianist Mathieu Pordoy, and together with his wife Amina Edris as part of Les Sommets de la Voix recital series in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.
Recent seasons have seen Pati make numerous acclaimed operatic debuts on the top European and US stages, including in Donizetti’s »L’elisir d’amore« as Nemorino, as Roméo in Gounod’s »Roméo et Juliette«, as Alfredo in Verdi’s »La traviata« and as des Grieux in Massenets »Manon«. Further highlights have been performances as Faust in Berlioz’ »La Damnation de Faust« (Opéra de Monte-Carlo), as Edgardo in Donizetti’s »Lucia di Lammermoor« (Teatro San Carlo di Napoli), in »Mitridate, re di Ponto« (Staatsoper Berlin), as Orombello in Bellini’s »Beatrice di Tenda« (Opéra national de Paris), as Rodolfo in »La Bohème« (Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and Canadian Opera Company), as Percy in »Anna Bolena« (Wiener Staatsoper), as Fernand in »La Favorite« (Opéra national de Bordeaux) and as Herzog in »Rigoletto« (Opéra de Rouen, Staatsoper Berlin und Teatro San Carlo). At the Festival d’Aix-en Provence he appeared as Amenophis in »Moïse et Pharaon« an in the title role of »La clemenza di Tito«. As part of Les Grandes Voix series, Pati joined the cast of Massenet’s »Thaïs« at Paris’ Théâtre des Champs-Elysées with Pierre Bleuse conducting l’Orchestre National de France and, as »Artist in Residence« with the CBSO and Music Director Kazuki Yamada, he sang both Berlioz’ »La Damnation de Faust« und Puccinis »Madama Butterfly« at Birmingham Symphony Hall.
Pene Pati is also an internationally acclaimed concert singer –whether at festive gala evenings, with renowned orchestras or live broadcasts of major events such as the 2024 Concert de Paris.
In the summer of 2024, his second album was released by Warner: »Nessun Dorma« with popular Italian and French popular arias and lesser-known masterpieces. For his debut album »Pene Pati« he already won the Opus Klassik »Young Artist of the Year« award as well as »Best Male Singer« at the Opera Critics‘ Awards and at the International Opera Awards he was honoured with the Opera Magazine Readers’ Award.
