Programme:
Music by Vincenzo Manfredini, Niccolò Piccinni und Domenico Cimarosa
Tsarina Catherine II became the official sovereign of Jever in 1793, where the princes of Anhalt, from whose line she descended, had already ruled for over 100 years. In faraway Russia, where she had taken over the regency from her mentally challenged husband Peter III in 1762, she promoted the arts in St. Petersburg as much as she could, aiming to turn the new residence into a centre of culture to rival those in Europe. A highly educated woman, Catherine the Great was in close contact with the intellectual greats of her time such as Voltaire and Montesquieu. She invited eminent Italian composers to her court, such as Niccolò Piccini, Vincenzo Manfredini and Domenico Cimarosa. The selection of arias and duets by these composers, presented by the participants of the atelier together with Alfredo Bernardini, Alessandro Quarta and the other tutors, will give a fascinating insight into the Baroque music written specially for Catherine and her court.
