»Great opera for small people« has been Taschenoper Lübeck’s motto since 2005, successfully showing how to make opera exciting for children and young people. After a 14-year cooperation with the municipal theatre, the Taschenoper Lübeck inaugurated its own venue in the middle of Lübeck’s Old Town Island in October 2021. With the support of foundations, the state and the city, TOL thus ventured into independence. Their work focusses on interactive small-scale pieces, new compositions and innovative workshop formats based on adaptations of well-known operas. Modern libretti and exciting interactive performances of the highest artistic quality reveal the fascinating world of opera to young audiences. The Taschenoper Lübeck does not just want to uphold the traditional art of opera, but also develop it further. This is the reason why it likes to present operas from the historic repertoire, but always manages to find an artistic format that appeals to young audiences and finds a message in the historical work that is also relevant today. TOL also started to include productions for adult opera novices in its programme in the autumn of 2022, positioning itself as both a music theatre and an arts education provider. The success of their concept is reflected in around 100 performances a year in Schleswig-Holstein, funding from the Fonds Darstellende Kunste, the Capital Cultural Fund, a nomination for the Junge Ohren prize and the high demand from national and international festivals including the Rheingau Music Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, the Lucerne Festival and the Kreativstudio of the Berlin Philharmonic.

After »Das magische Game – eine Zauberflöte« at the Musikfest Bremen in 2022 and »Hans und Greta« in 2023, young and young-at-heart audiences can now look forward to the »Science Fiction Oper« (ages 6 and up).
