»Devastatingly beautiful« (Gramophone Magazine) and »phenomenal« (The Times) are appropriate attributes to describe the Tenebrae vocal ensemble: purity of tone and perfect intonation, balance and homogeneity allow the audience to experience both the power and the intimacy of the human voice at its finest. Under the direction of Nigel Short, the award-winning ensemble performs at major international festivals and venues across the globe, including the BBC proms, Edinburgh International Festival, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Gstaad Menuhin Festival and Melbourne Festival. They have gained international acclaim for their interpretations of choral works from the Renaissance through to contemporary masterpieces by composers including Judith Bingham, Ola Gjeilo, Alexander L’Estrange, Alexander Levine, Paweł Łukaszewski, Paul Mealor, Hilary Tann, Joby Talbot, Sir John Tavener and Will Todd. The ensemble has collaborated with some of the world’s leading orchestras and regularly appears with the Academy of Ancient Music, the Aurora Orchestra and the Britten Sinfonia. They also partner with St. John’s Smith Square to organise an annual Holy Week Festival.

Its outstanding recordings have earnt the ensemble several awards (BBC Music Magazine Awards amongst others) and nominations (e.g. Gramophone Award).

Tenebrae is committed to supporting talented young professional singers with scholarships, workshops and performance opportunities.
