Johann Sebastian Bach: »Goldberg Variations« BWV 988 (Transcription by Nevermind)
Jean Rondeau is a highly talented soloist on the harpsichord, organ and piano. But the busy French all-round musician is also co-founder of the Nevermind quartet, who have come together in their enthusiasm for early music, jazz and folk. With their exceptional virtuosity and vitality as well as their obvious joy in experimentation, Nevermind transcend the boundaries of the traditional quartet repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries. In Arp-Schnitger’s baptismal church, the quartet present Bach’s Goldberg Variations for harpsichord in their own version for four instruments. Outrageous? Not at all, because most of the variations are in three parts, which is why even the very first printed editions contained arrangements for melody instruments. And so the sophisticated structure of Bach’s highlight of the baroque art of variations, with its constant changes of style, tempo and affect, may gain depth, volume and plasticity in the Nevermind version – with full respect to the spirit of Bach’s original!
