Olivier Latry: improvisation
World-Renowned Soloist plays Legendary Instrument – that could be the title of Olivier Latry’s encounter with the Walcker Organ in Papenburg. The former has been the titular organist of the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris for almost 40 years and is one of the most in-demand virtuosos on his instrument, who has performed in more than 50 countries on 5 continents. The instrument in Papenburg in turn is, with its 92 stops and 7,262 pipes, Germany’s largest surviving organ from the Weimar Republic. With a master of registration like Latry, this promises to be exciting! With Johannes Brahms at the centre, whose Prelude and Fugue in G minor was written in 1857 with organ and counterpoint studies in mind, he establishes interesting cross-references - to the master of the Baroque Bach as well as to composers such as Marcel Dupré, a classic of French modernism, and Louis Vierne, one of his predecessors in his Parisian post. There is also room for his breathtaking skills in the great tradition of French improvisation: Bienvenue Olivier Latry!
