Alena Baeva
Alena Baeva was born into a musical family in Osh (now Kyrgyzstan) in 1985. She began playing the violin at the age of five under Olga Danilova in Alma-Ata. In 1995 she started studying violin with Eduard Grach at the Central Music School of the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow after which she attended the conservatory from 2002 to 2007. In addition to her formal education, she took lessons with Mstislav Rostropovich, Boris Garlitsky and Seiji Ozawa as well as attending masterclasses with Shlomo Mintz, Ida Haendel and Maxim Vengerov. She won the Grand Prix of the international Niccolò Paganini Competition in Moscow at the age of just 16, which gave her the opportunity to play the Stradivarius that once belonged to Henryk Wieniawski. She also won the gold medal and the audience prize at the International Violin Competition in Sendai (2007).
The violinist has been living in Luxembourg since 2010 and works with leading orchestras and conductors all over the world. She is considered one of the most exciting, versatile and compelling artists on the world stage – a »magnetic presence« (New York Classical Review) and »a constantly fascinating sound technician« (Badische Zeitung). Endowed with a passionate curiosity for music, Baeva has already mastered an impressive repertoire that is constantly expanding – including more than fifty violin concertos. In addition to the standard classical repertoire, she also champions lesser-known works and brings music by composers such as Grażyna Bacewicz, Frangis Ali-Zadeh Karaev, Mieczysław Karłowicz and Valentyn Silvestrov to the stage.
Her international solo career has progressed rapidly in recent years. She has performed with prestigious orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. She has a close, long-standing relationship with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, with whom she regularly performs and records on period instruments.
Chamber music holds a special place in Alena Baeva’s musical career. She has performed with acclaimed artists such as Yuri Bashmet, Daishin Kashimoto, Mischa Maisky, Jean-Guihen Queyras, the Belcea Quartet and with her partner, the celebrated Ukrainian pianist Vadym Kholodenko, with whom she made her Musikfest debut in 2023.
Alena Baeva is an Alpha Classics exclusive artist. »Fantasy«, the first album in her multi-part collaboration with the label, with Vadym Kholodenko, was released in February 2024.
