The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree – a saying that certainly applies to Masato Suzuki. The son of renowned Bach specialist and founder of the Bach Collegium Japan, he was born into a musical family. After studying in Tokyo, The Hague and Amsterdam, he went on to become an acclaimed harpsichordist, organist, composer and conductor in his own right. He has been a permanent member of the Bach Collegium Japan since 2002, becoming its principal conductor in 2018. No wonder then that Bach is also the focus of his concert in Bockhorn. The organ, which boasts 19 stops on two manuals and pedal, was built by Christian Vater, one of Arp Schnitger’s former apprentices. He personally inaugurated it on 25 December 1722 – about six months before Bach became Thomaskantor in Leipzig. Including works by Dieterich Buxtehude and Georg Böhm demonstrates the great influence of these two North German masters on Bach’s organ music.
