ASF V: Die Kunst der Fuge

Masaaki and Masato Suzuki organ and harpsichord
Programme:
Johann Sebastian Bach: Die Kunst der Fuge BWV 1080
Following their solo recitals in Bockhorn and Otterndorf, Masaaki and Masato Suzuki are joining forces in Grasberg. The father-and-son duo will combine their extensive knowledge of Bach’s work to explore the Thomaskantor’s compositions together. Not just with any work: They are tackling none other than »The Art of the Fugue«, Bach’s musical testament, left unfinished at his death. This piece cemented Bach’s reputation as one of the greatest masters of counterpoint in fugue composition. However, he did not specify which instrument he composed the cycle for. Nevertheless, no adaptations are required for keyboard instruments, leading to the general assumption that it is intended for the organ, harpsichord, or piano. In what is arguably Bach’s most carefully crafted work, intellect meets emotion. In the Suzuki duo’s performance, the intricate, mystical web of sounds reveals deeply expressive poetic harmonies.
