Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 in E minor Op. 64
Despite only having been created in 2017, it is already impossible to imagine the international music scene without the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (MCO). Their chamber music style of ensemble playing – to listen and react to each other – was pioneered by its founding father Claudio Abbado. Precise, animated and technically masterful, it is the ideal partner for Anastasia Kobekina. In her critically acclaimed Musikfest debut last year, the cellist captivated the audience with her precision, depth and clear phrasing. A perfect fit for Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1, written for none other than Mstislav Rostropovich. Tchaikovsky was personally unhappy with his fifth Symphony, composed in 1888, but without grounds: the powerful symphony with its unforgettable melodies quickly gained recognition after its premiere and remains one of his most popular works to this day. And with his third performance at this year’s festival, Maxim Emelyanychev is once again guaranteed to deliver dynamic and exciting interpretations.
