Founded in 2009 in the Arctic Circle and run by the two Northern Norwegian cities of Bodø and Tromsø, the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra is the world’s northernmost professional orchestra. The aim of the critically acclaimed orchestra is to show their sense of belonging to the Arctic and to bring the region closer to the rest of the world. In his work »Cantus Arcticus«, Finnish composer Einojuhani Ratuavaara brings the audience into a musical dialogue with birdsong in the Arctic Circle. The young Norwegian violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing developed a love of nature at an early age thanks to her father, a scientist responsible for protecting a nature reserve. Together with the orchestra she presents an »Arctic Suite«, weaving works by Nordic composers into a dense, atmospheric soundscape. The programme is complemented by the single-movement seventh symphony by Sibelius and visually enhanced by a video installation, taking the audience on a journey to a region of unparalleled beauty, which is now threatened by climate change on an unprecedented scale
