Maxim Shalygin: KHORA (2025)
The young Ukrainian harpsichordist Dmytro Kokoshynskyy studied in Kiev and Basel, winning second prize in the world-famous harpsichord competitions in Milan (2021) and Bruges (2023). The inspiration for his programme, »Music for These Troubled Times« comes from Robert Burton’s theory in »The Anatomy of Melancholy«, which states that many »are melancholy by hearing music, but it is a pleasing melancholy; and therefore […] a most present remedy: it expels cares, alters their grieved minds, and easeth in an instant.« Burton wrote these words in 1621, at the time of Tallis, Byrd, Bull and Gibbons, whose works form the focal point of the programme. Building a bridge between the melancholy of centuries past and the present day, Kokoshynskyy will also perform KHORA, a piece written specially for this project by the contemporary Ukrainian-Dutch composer Maxim Shalygin. A programme that celebrates the power of music to dispel worries, transform grief and offer comfort.
