Programme:
»JANUA – Echoes of the last Schism«: Works by Guillaume Dufay, Janus Plousiadenos and Manuel Doukas Chrysaphes

The Irini Ensemble specialise in early sacred music from East and West, between Rome and Constantinople. Their programme »JANUA« unites Guillaume Dufay, one of the main innovators of polyphonic vocal music in the papal chapel at the beginning of the 15th century, with two of the most important Byzantine composers. When the warm, dark vocals mesmerisingly blend with the sounds of medieval trumpets and trombones, the last attempt to unite the Orient and the Occident shortly before the fall of the Byzantine Empire is briefly brought back to life - it goes straight from the ears to the soul!
