Programme:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major K. 488, Symphonies No. 20 in D major K. 133 and No. 39 in E flat major K. 543
Maxim Emelyanychev's affinity with Mozart goes back a long way: when he was still a choirboy, his nickname was »Mozart«. This special bond also plays an important role in his work with period instrument ensemble Il pomo d’oro, which he has conducted since 2016: they recently released a complete recording of all 41 of Mozart's symphonies, where each time an early symphony is juxtaposed with a late one. At the Musikfest, the festive, extravagant 20th Symphony will be combined with the 39th Symphony, the least famous of his final three symphonies. Maxim Emelyanychev is bound to change this with his vibrant interpretation, which oscillates between poetic reverie and playful intoxication. The Piano Concerto No. 23 completes the programme, for which the conductor, an equally gifted pianist, exchanges his baton for a copy of a Walter Hammerklavier from 1792. From this instrument he will elicit the right mixture of airy brilliance and gripping expressivity for one of Mozart’s most popular piano concertos, which exemplifies the genre like no other – Mozart forever!
