Programme:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Divertimento in E-flat major K. 563
Gideon Klein: String Trio
Ludwig van Beethoven: String Trio in C minor Op. 9/3
The internationally acclaimed Franco-German Cellist Nicolas Altstaedt has showcased his love of chamber music before at the Musikfest: solo as well as in a duo and an octet. This time he returns in a world-class trio with violinist Ilya Gringolts and violist Lawrence Power. His choice of programme could explain his choice of partners: Mozart’s only string trio, the divertimento K. 563 was long considered impossible to play. Its six movements, which make it his longest piece of chamber music, require three first-rate virtuosos to master the parts. With his String Trio op. 9/3, Beethoven achieved almost symphonic dimensions and completely revolutionised the genre as it had been known until then. With Gideon Klein, the artists pay remembrance to one of cultural history’s darkest chapters: musical life in the Nazi concentration camps. The son of Czech Jews, completed his string trio in October 1944 in Theresienstadt, where he had been imprisoned since 1941. Nine days later he was deported to Auschwitz. It is beyond remarkable how Klein managed to compose such joyful, life-embracing music under these circumstances…
