Songs by Johannes Brahms and contemporaries

Besides his symphonies, string quartets and piano music, Johannes Brahms was a prolific composer of Lieder throughout his career. His »Feldeinsamkeit« became world famous as the epitome of the German classical art song. The text was written by the author Herman Allmers (1821-1902), who was born in Rechtenfleth. Known around the country as the »Marshland poet«, he was notable for a lifestyle that remained closely attached to his home region but with an open-minded worldliness thanks to his exploration of distant lands. We do not know how Brahms came across the text. As he remained interested in his North German homeland all his life, the harmonious fusion of man and nature in Allmers’ poem may have appealed to him. Austrian baritone Georg Nigl is one of the most renowned Lied singers of our time. Together with his long-term pianist Olga Pashchenko, he presents the Musikfest Atelier »Feldeinsamkeit«. When participants chosen from all over the world join the two of them in devoting themselves to Brahms’ and his contemporaries’ lied repertoire, Allmers’ idea of »heimat«, which includes the foreign and the unfamiliar, takes on a new meaning …
