Modest Mussorgsky: »Pictures at an Exhibition« (orchestral version by Maurice Ravel)
The German National Youth Orchestra is Germany’s youngest elite orchestra, comprising young musicians aged 14 to 19. This summer, they are embarking on a tour featuring two of the most promising young musicians, who have won several prestigious international competitions: Aurel Dawidiuk and Giorgi Gigashvili, both born in 2000. The concert programme combines past and present. Giya Kancheli’s »Another Step« is simultaneously modern and archaic, with sweeping sounds and extremely subtle dynamics. Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto is one of the most challenging pieces in the repertoire, renowned for its virtuosity and emotional power. Perfect for Gigashvili, who combines astonishing precision with expressive power. Around 50 years after Modest Mussorgsky’s 1874 piano cycle »Pictures at an Exhibition«, Maurice Ravel created a setting for large orchestra, capturing the rich colours and rhythmic power of the original so brilliantly and effectively that it has become impossible to imagine the classical repertoire without it.
