Chinese-Canadian pianist Bruce Liu burst onto the world stage in 2021 when he won the International Chopin Piano Competition. Celebrated for his »playing of breathtaking beauty« (BBC Music Magazine), the young Chinese-Canadian pianist with »magician’s fingers« (Le Monde) has captivated audiences ever since. It goes without saying that Chopin is part of his Bremen debut, but the programme as a whole looks at how piano music developed from the 19th to the 20th century. Without Beethoven’s groundbreaking »Waldstein Sonata«, Franz Liszt’s jaw-dropping virtuosity in Rhapsodie espagnole arguably would never have existed. Meanwhile Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy created the dazzling cornerstones of French Impressionism with their subtle brilliance. With his phenomenal technique, exquisite touch, and keen sense of subtle shifts in colour and sound, Bruce Liu demonstrates the importance of piano playing in his life: »Music has the power to help me cleanse my soul.« Bring it on!
