Tenebrae
»Devastatingly beautiful« (Gramophone Magazine) and »phenomenal« (The Times) are apt descriptions of the vocal ensemble Tenebrae: With their crystal-clear voices and flawless intonation, balance and cohesion, the singers of this English chamber choir allow the audience to experience both the full power and the intimacy of the human voice. After their 2024 Musikfest concert, the Weser-Kurier described them as »conjuring up sounds of such magic that one is utterly overwhelmed«.
Founded in 2001 by Nigel Short, Tenebrae celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. The ensemble performs at major festivals and in leading venues around the world, including the BBC Proms, Wigmore Hall, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Rheingau Music Festival and the Sydney Festival. Their concerts receive high critical acclaim and range from the Renaissance to contemporary masterpieces by composers such as Judith Bingham, Joanna Marsh, Owain Park, Josephine Stephenson, Joby Talbot and Roderick Williams. Tenebrae has collaborated with some of England’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra, Academy of Ancient Music and Britten Sinfonia.
The ensemble has won multiple awards for its outstanding recordings on labels such as Signum, LSO Live and Warner Classics, including two BBC Music Magazine Awards, an Edison Classical Music Award, a Grammy nomination and an Opus Klassik.
Tenebrae is also dedicated to supporting talented young singers with scholarships, workshops and performance opportunities. Tenebrae Schools aims to embed a long-lasting culture of singing activities in local primary schools which might otherwise face barriers to music-making. Through its Associate Artists programme, Tenebrae also provides talented young professional singers with vital experience and support in the early stages of their careers.
