Fretwork viol consort
Alexander Chance countertenor
Kristiina Watt lute

Programme:
John Dowland: »Flow my tears«, »Come again, sweet love«, »In darkness let me dwell«, »I saw my lady weep« und »Time stands still« as well as other lute songs and instrumental works

In 2022, Alexander Chance became the first countertenor to ever win the International Handel Singing Competition. For British artists, John Dowland’s lute songs form part of the standard repertoire, while also serving as a litmus test. The composer conveys a wide range of emotions through them, including love, heartbreak, melancholy, despair and grief. Alexander Chance’s clear, velvety timbre and flawless phrasing capture the sensual, melancholic and tender nature of these songs so perfectly that Gramophone magazine has declared him the most exciting British countertenor of his generation. Performing alongside Fretwork and lutenist Kristiina Watt, Chance brings the unique timeless nature of these songs to life, making it impossible not to be deeply moved by this bittersweet music…
