Programme:
Sergei Rachmaninoff: »All-Night Vigil« op. 37 (excerpts)
Arvo Pärt: »Kanon Pokajanen« (excerpts)

Choral music runs deep in Estonia. One of the Baltic republic’s best choirs is the multi-award-winning Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir (EPCC). In his »All-Night Vigil«, composed in 1915, Sergei Rachmaninoff combined the monophonic chants of Russian Orthodox church music with his late Romantic conception of music, creating a timeless magnum opus full of emotional depth about transience, death and resurrection. The »Kanon Pokajanen«, written by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt in the late 1990s to mark the 750th anniversary of Cologne Cathedral, combines elements of Minimal Art, Gregorian chant and the Eastern orthodox church tradition to create an a cappella masterpiece as if made for the EPCC.
