Christina Pluhar was born in Graz and studied the concert and baroque guitar, lute, theorbo, baroque harp and early music. She has lived in Paris as a freelance artist for over 25 years. She has performed at numerous prestigious festivals as a soloist and continuo player with various ensembles and baroque orchestras. In 2000, she founded her own ensemble, L’Arpeggiata, whose unconventional performances around the globe have thrilled audiences and critics alike. She has also worked with several renowned ensembles and artists, including La Fenice, Hespèrion XXI, Il Giardino Armonico, Concerto Soave, Accordone, Elyma, Les Musiciens du Louvre, Ricercar Consort and Cantus Cölln.

Christina Pluhar moves effortlessly between jazz and Baroque, southern European folk music and atmospheric Renaissance tunes, unencumbered by academic rigidity while at the same time retaining a solid scholarly foundation.

She has won several major music awards with L’Arpeggiata, including several ECHO Klassik awards, for example for the album »Teatro d’Amore« featuring Nuria Rial and Philippe Jaroussky, which they presented at the 2010 Musikfest Bremen. »Los Pájaros Perdidos« and »Mediterraneo« delighted the audience in Bremen in 2012 and 2013 respectively. In 2016, the Musikfest audience enjoyed her passionate interpretation of Monteverdi’s »L’Orfeo« with Magdalena Kožená and Rolando Villazón, and in 2017 her Musikfest concert »Handel Goes Wild« centred on George Frideric Handel. The eponymous recording won the 2018 OPUS Klassik award. In 2021, Christina Pluhar and Rolando Villazón revisited the theme of Orpheus with »Orfeo son io« and, following its Musikfest premiere, explored it further through countless subsequent performances. The current programme, conceived, arranged and conducted by Pluhar on the theorbo, ranges from Monteverdi and his contemporaries via Christoph Willibald Gluck to the 20th century with Carlos Gardel and Luiz Bonfá.
